The Pigsgusset Initiative would like to petition the Town Council to begin a process of reconsidering the name of the delta in Watertown Square, presently called the Columbus Delta. Their hope is that this process will generate a new name that is more inclusive of all members of our community and the history of the place we now call home.
Pigsgusset is the name given by the Pequosette band of the Massachusett tribe to the area we now call Watertown. It means “The Meadows at the Widening of the River.” The Pigsgusset Initiative led the discussion of Columbus at the October 2020 meeting of Watertown Citizens for Peace, Justice, and the Environment.
It is hoped that this discussion can continue, as citizens and neighbors, for the delta to be renamed so it becomes more welcoming of all members of our community and better reflects the history of the place we now call home. This petition will ask the Watertown Town Council to initiate the process for a change in the naming of the delta in Watertown Square.
