Take Action on Clean Water Act and MA Bag Law

Defend the Clean Water Act

Clean water is vital to our ecology, our health, and our quality of life. Finalized in 2015, a Clean Water Rule within that act restored federal protections to half the nation’s streams, which help provide drinking water to one in every three Americans.

The Rule also protects millions of acres of wetlands that provide wildlife habitat and keep pollutants out of America’s great waterways, from the Great Lakes to Chesapeake Bay to Puget Sound. This Rule is now under attack by the Trump administration through court suits and Executive Orders.

The latest threat is a proposed narrowing of the definition of ‘Waters of the United States’ that would reduce by half the waters being regulated by the EPA concerning such matters as point source discharges; dredge and fill permits, and oil spill prevention programs

Take action by April 15th. The EPA’s comment period for the proposed changes to the Clean Water Act ends on April 15th.

Before that date, tell the EPA you do not approve of the proposed redefinition of “Waters of the United States” because it significantly reduces the scope of the Clean Water Act to protect wetlands and ensure safe water for all Americans.

Want Massachusetts to have a Statewide Bag Law?

Tell Your Legislators! We at 95 bag laws statewide, with many more in the works.

Please contact your legislator and ask him or her to support Bill H.771/S. 462.https://malegislature.gov/Search/FindMyLegislator

If you can come, here’s the scoop:

1. Wear something green.

2. Be prepared to sit in a hot, stuffy room — the committee will be hearing testimony on multiple bills, so there may be a long wait before we’re up.

3. Don’t feel obliged to testify — showing up in green will send the message. If you do testify, speak from your own experience. There will be organizational reps talking about global issues — ocean gyres, marine life, etc. — and we want to avoid repetition. Focus on what you’ve seen in your own town; the more personal your story, the more powerful your testimony will be. If you’ve passed a bag law, tell the legislators about the good effects it’s had.

4. Tell the legislators that you support a 10 cent fee for paper bags because you know that is the best way to reduce waste all around.
