It’s Time to Be Afraid and It’s Time to Take Action – Nuclear War: Consequences and Alternatives

14Sep2024

From 2:30 PM until 4:30 PM

At Watertown Free Public Library - Watertown Savings Bank Room

123 Main Street

The Peace and Common Security Working Group of Watertown Citizens is continuing to collect signatures of Watertown voters on a Citizen Petition that urges the City Council to support a nuclear disarmament resolution better known as the Back from the Brink resolution. The group hopes that Watertown will join cities and states across the countries who have issued similar resolutions including Massachusetts’ three largest cities – Boston, Springfield, and Worcester – and smaller communities in the Commonwealth such as Goshen, Easthampton, and Marshfield to name just a few.

In an effort to raise awareness about the resolution and the threat of a nuclear exchange, the Working Group is sponsoring an educational program at the Watertown Free Public Library on Saturday, September 14 at 2:30 PM titled “It is Time to be Afraid, It is Time to Take Action – Nuclear War: Consequences and Alternatives.”  The program will feature a short film, What Would Really Happen During Nuclear War followed by presentations by Dr. Ira Helfand and Ms. Anduin DeVos.

Dr. Halperin is an internationally recognized nuclear abolitionist who has played a leadership role in the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), the International Physicians for the Prevent of Nuclear War, (IPPNW) and the Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR).  Ms. DeVos is the Organizing Coordinator at Warheads to Windmills where she focuses on the relationship of nuclear war to climate and on alternatives to nuclear weapons.  For more information on the program or to get involved in collecting signatures from your neighbors and friends, contact watertowncitizens@gmail.com.
