From 5:30 PM until 6:30 PM
Building off an amazing successful turn out of nearly 500 residents from Watertown and surrounding areas on Tuesday, June 2,Watertown Citizens for Black Lives will be resuming our regular peaceful vigils, held on the second Tuesday of the month, to denounce the killing of Black people by police. We also stand against the deep-seated racist patterns in our society that have led to Black people dying of Covid-19 at more than twice the rate of white people. Details follow:
- We will gather - with masks and maintaining social distancing of 6 feet apart - on
Tuesday, June 9th from 5:30-6:30, in the delta area of Watertown Square.
- Listening to some voices of people of color, we suggest that only people of color should carry signs reading, “I can’t breathe,” and that people refrain from depicting violent imagery of police brutality as it can be retraumatizing.
- For this vigil, we hope to amplify the names of Breonna Taylor, Manuel Ellis, and David McAtee in addition to George Floyd, all four killed by police officers.
- For the last 8 minutes and 46 seconds of the vigil, we will kneel in quiet reflection for the duration of time George Floyd suffered under the knee of his killer.
Please bring your own signs reflecting your feelings about the killings and what you think should be done.
