SUPPORT THE NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT RESOLUTION- Do It Today!
BEFORE THE WATERTOWN CITY COUNCIL
The Nuclear Disarmament Committee of Watertown Citizens for Peace, Justice and the Environment has submitted a Resolution to the City Council that directs the City of Watertown to call on the United States to lead a global effort to prevent nuclear war by:
1) actively pursuing a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals,
2) renouncing the option of first use of nuclear weapons,
3) ending the sole, unchecked authority of the President to launch a nuclear attack,
4) taking U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert, and
5) canceling the plan to replace the entire nuclear arsenal of the U.S. with enhanced weapons.
The Resolution also directs the City of Watertown to send a copy of the Resolution to Representative Katherine Clark, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Edward Markey, and President Donald Trump.

Dear Councilors or Dear Councilor XXXX,
I am writing to ask for your support for the Nuclear Disarmament Resolution that will soon be before the City Council. The threat of a nuclear exchange is growing by the day as the U.S., Russia, and China are increasing and upgrading their nuclear arsenals. Current conflicts between Russia and Ukraine, India and Pakistan, and Israel and Iran also add to the potential for a nuclear exchange. The risk of a nuclear accident or a response to what is a false launching increases when the threat of a nuclear attack is imminent. Further, threatening to use nuclear weapons by a nuclear armed nation to achieve its political goals only increases nuclear proliferation efforts by non-nuclear nations, such as Iran and South Korea.
As you are an elected official whose responsibility is to protect me and my family, I ask you to recognize the need to reduce the potential for nuclear war which would directly impact the safety of Watertown residents. Nuclear disarmament is a local issue that deserves your support. Please vote so Watertown will join the other 19 Massachusetts cities and towns, including Marshfield, Amherst, Holyoke, Goshen, Newton, Shutesbury, Winsor, Boston, who have passed similar resolutions and who vie
