The Massachusetts Safe Communities Coalition, MIRA, and other organizations announce the biggest mobilization yet for the Safe Communities Act: On Friday, Jan 24, the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security will hold a day-long hearing on the Safe Communities Act, in the largest room in the State House, Gardner Auditorium.
Key Features of the Safe Communities Act are:
1. No questions about immigration status
2. Protects due process
3. Limits notifications to ICE
4. No more 287(g) agreements
5. Provides crucial training and accountability
See here for more details.
Be there if you can; we need a massive show of support, with advocates from all across the state. Groups are already coming on buses from Western Mass., New Bedford, the Merrimack Valley and more. The goal is to keep Gardner packed all day, working in shifts. There will also be a press event at 9 a.m., before things get started, and constituents will be calling and visiting legislators as well.
It’s past time Massachusetts stand up and say loud and clear: immigrants are welcome here! Not one dollar of our state and local resources should be used to tear families apart.
What will your role be on this big day? Please use the RSVP link here to help us plan and organize — and if you can’t come, consider supporting this mobilization by calling your legislators, spreading the word, and contributing to the mobilization fund here.
