Folks,
I know I flood you with a lot of information, but the resources (links) in
the BftB email are fabulous. If you are going to help get signatures on
our Petition to Clark, there are plenty of talking points. The video with
McGovern is also very good.
Best,
Tony

Dear Tony:
Last Wednesday’s *Growing Support for Nuclear Abolition* webinar with
Congressman Jim McGovern and 140 folks from around the country was truly
inspiring. Back from the Brink expresses our deepest appreciation to the
Congressman for his wisdom and insights and for the terrific conversation
we had with him about H. Res. 77
<https://preventnuclearwar.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=37fc1bad364291720e441fe8e&id=ab1fa9e887&e=975a04c5ca>
and the many ways folks can make a difference, engage with their members of
Congress, build relationships and educate others within their communities.
We invite you to view *this recording*

of the event as well as to check out links and comments

that surfaced in the chat during the 2nd part of the webinar.
*One major takeaway from the event is that our advocacy in support of H.
Res. 77 is working *and we need to keep at it and grow the numbers over the
coming months. The resolution currently has 25 cosponsors and our goal is
50 cosponsors by the end of June and 75 cosponsors by August 6.
And here’s something wonderful to celebrate. Of the 25 current cosponsors
<https://preventnuclearwar.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=37fc1bad364291720e441fe8e&id=f84d5c6630&e=975a04c5ca>
of H. Res. 77 (as of 6/5/23),16 of them (or 60%) are people of color. Of
those sixteen, 10 of them are women of color. We thank and honor each of
these leaders and trail blazers!
*If your representative is among those who have cosponsored*, there's still
a lot you can do:
- Thank your representative directly and publicly though social media.
- Ask your rep to give a floor speech, issue a public statement, or
announce their H. Res. 77 cosponsorship on their social media channels.
- Write a letter to the editor thanking your rep for their leadership
and support of a world free of nuclear weapons.
*If your representative has not yet cosponsored*, be persistent and
respectful as you make your case and ask others to do the same. Share our H.
Res. 77 Q&A Backgrounder

for House Offices

and organizational sign-on letter

with
your rep and let them know if any municipalities in their district

have adopted a BftB resolution. Be sure to identify yourself as a
constituent, and follow up if a week or more goes by without a
response. And remember what Congressman McGovern told us—*politics are
local and relationships matter*.
Here are some specific actions you can take:
- Reach out to your rep’s DC office (find contact information here
<https://preventnuclearwar.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=37fc1bad364291720e441fe8e&id=f81f44bdfd&e=975a04c5ca>)
and ask to speak to the aide who handles nuclear weapons issues. Here are
some talking points
<https://preventnuclearwar.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=37fc1bad364291720e441fe8e&id=e2971aa2ec&e=975a04c5ca>.
If the aide is not available, you can leave a message and ask that person
to call you back, or ask for their email address and send an email urging
your rep to cosponsor H. Res. 77.
- Call your rep’s district office and ask to speak to the scheduler to
request a brief meeting or to hand-deliver our H. Res. 77 Q&A
Backgrounder for House Offices
<https://preventnuclearwar.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=37fc1bad364291720e441fe8e&id=53ab94e9ce&e=975a04c5ca>
.
- If you get a meeting, invite a few others from your community to
participate, preferably people who represent diverse backgrounds and
interests. Each person should speak for no more than a few minutes, adding
local or personal concerns when possible. Send a thank you email or card
after the meeting.
- Write your own organizational sign-on letter to your rep and ask local
organizations in your community to sign it. Include local aspects or
concerns in your letter if possible. After you deliver the letter, follow
up with a phone call or meeting request.
- Organize a resolution effort for your town, city, county or state and
include support for H. Res. 77 in the resolution. Here’s a sample
resolution

that you can customize for your community, and here are tips for getting
resolutions adopted

*What About My Senators? *
While a Senate companion to H. Res. 77 has not yet been introduced, it's
important for senators to be hearing from constituents as well. Many of the
actions described above would be equally effective in trying to get your
senators more engaged. Please reach out to us and we'd be happy to work
with you to think through your approach to them.
*Check out* *BftB’s newly updated H. Res. 77 Advocacy Resources Page *

more tips and helpful information, and don't hesitate to reach out to us
<jeremy at preventnuclearwar.org?subject=Request%20for%20support> for support.
*Looking ahead, Back from the Brink hopes to work with many of you* to do
community education and outreach in conjunction with the release of the
widely anticipated Christopher Nolan film, Oppenheimer

which will be in theaters nationwide starting July 21. We’re also beginning
to plan for the 2nd Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the
Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)

to
be held in New York City in November. Please be in touch with Jeremy Love
<jeremy at preventnuclearwar.org> to discuss how we might work together.
Finally, a request for those who are able. *Please consider a* *financial

Our ambition far exceeds our resources and capacity. We need more funds to
scale up our campaign and bring new folks onto the team. Plus, if you make
a one-time donation of $75 or more or become a sustainer with monthly
donations of $10 or more, you'll receive a Back from the Brink t-shirt!
Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Back from the Brink
